Every Taiwan visa route, explained

Taiwan has a route for every purpose — around 60 nationalities enter visa-free for 14–90 days, most others apply for an R.O.C. Visitor Visa online then lodge it at an overseas mission, and six Southeast/South Asian nationalities can use the free online Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC) instead. PRC, Hong Kong and Macao passport holders use a separate National Immigration Agency entry-permit system entirely. Routes with verified guides link straight to them; the rest link to the official boca.gov.tw pages.

The routes

Visit & tourism

Study

Study — visitor visa (short) / resident visa

Short-term study (e.g. studying Chinese for less than six months) runs on a visitor visa; degree study and stays over six months need a resident visa. See BOCA's Study in Taiwan pages.

Other routes

  • Qualifying citizens of the six listed Southeast/South Asian countries

Landing visa

Visa granted on arrival in limited cases — e.g. nationals of visa-exempt countries travelling on emergency or temporary passports (US passport holders excepted, who remain visa-exempt). Granted at the discretion of the border authorities.

  • Eligible travellers who could not obtain a visa before departure

Digital nomad visitor visa

Visitor visa for remote workers introduced in January 2025 — work remotely from Taiwan for a longer visit without local employment. Requirements include proof of remote work and income; see the official BOCA page.

  • Remote workers and freelancers employed outside Taiwan

PRC, Hong Kong and Macao travellers — entry permit (separate system)

Holders of PRC, Hong Kong and Macao passports do not use BOCA's visa system (the online visa forms explicitly exclude them). They apply for an Exit & Entry Permit through the National Immigration Agency's own online systems.
