NZeTA (visa-waiver visit): Irish citizen in Ireland → New Zealand
Irish citizens don't need a visa to visit New Zealand — Ireland is on the visa-waiver list. Request an NZeTA (valid 2 years) and pay the IVL before you travel; stay up to 3 months at a time.
Visa-waiver visit to New Zealand — Irish citizens do not need a visitor visa, but must hold a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before travelling.
- Validity
- NZeTA is valid for 2 years for travellers
- Entries
- Visa-waiver visits while the NZeTA is valid — up to 3 months at a time
- Max stay per visit
- Up to 3 months at a time
When to start
Start 3–14 days before your travel date.
Ireland is on New Zealand's visa-waiver list, so you can travel without a visitor visa — but you must get an NZeTA first.
Use the official NZeTA website or mobile app to request your NZeTA. The fee starts at NZD $17 and you pay the NZD $100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) at the same time.
Don't book last-minute: NZeTA requests can take up to 72 hours to process, though many are processed more quickly. Once granted, the NZeTA is valid for 2 years.
As a visa-waiver visitor you can stay up to 3 months at a time (the 6-month allowance applies only to UK travellers). You cannot work in New Zealand on a visa-waiver visit, and you need enough funds and a paid onward ticket.
You are granted your visa-waiver visit on arrival at no extra fee — but an NZeTA is not a guarantee of entry: you can be refused entry permission if you are not a genuine visitor.

Gotchas to watch
- An approved NZeTA is not a guarantee of entry — you can be refused entry permission if you are not a genuine visitor or do not meet character requirements.
- Allow 72 hours for the NZeTA to be processed — don't leave the request to the day of departure.
- The NZD $100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) is paid together with the NZeTA request.
- You cannot work in New Zealand on a visa-waiver visit; study is limited to up to 3 months in any 12-month period.
- The 6-month visa-waiver stay applies only to travellers from the United Kingdom — Irish citizens get up to 3 months at a time.
