Malaysia is on Japan's visa-exemption list, but the exemption applies only to holders of an ICAO-compliant ePassport — without one you are advised to obtain a visa in advance.
Make sure your Malaysian passport is an ePassport in compliance with ICAO standards — look for the ePassport symbol on the front cover.
Landing permission for Malaysian citizens is granted for 90 days — Malaysia is not among the shorter-period exceptions (15 days for Indonesia/Thailand, 30 days for Brunei/Qatar). The exemption covers short visits, not paid work.
You can register your immigration and customs details online in advance and show the 2D code on arrival to speed up procedures — optional, not a visa requirement.
